The insects were photographed by Leonora Shell of butterflies in her insect teaching collection, and many of these specimens are 50 years old and have been enjoyed by hundreds of students around the country. A tenant of the Montessori philosophy is that what is offered to the child should be beautiful and accurate to nature; these are as close to natural size and color and images are of actual insects, not imaginary or drawn butterflies.
